Jets and Meatballs

I’m fortunate to have close access the military flight line from time to time. But I’m not really able to choreograph the shoots, beyond asking the pilots to “take off by this point,” or “try to land by this point.” So I just get in around the runway and try to get the most unique perspective I can. At one point when I was in a good position, I was bummed that there was a large orange machine in the foreground, decked out with lights. But I took this shot of the jet just beyond it.

I was considering removing the distracting orange device in my post processing, but I showed the image to my brother-in-law, a Navy pilot, before I did. To my surprise, he thought it was awesome that I was able to get the “meatball” in the shot. He explained that every pilot who lands on a carrier relies on this device to help gauge their landing. The bottom two lights are red, and if you see those, you are too low and will land below the flight deck. Suddenly the lines “Call the ball” and “Roger ball” from Top Gun make sense. Once I learned this, I realized what a potentially cool shot I had. So the following week when I had the opportunity to shoot again on a different runway, I made sure to discuss with the pilot where I wanted him to take off. This time I wasn’t messing around: I was all about proper framing of the meatball. As an added bonus, this day the squadron was flying their flagship jet or CAG as they call it. It’s painted with special detail to separate it from the other jets. Just one additional feature that made this shot even more unique, and more special to the pilots--one of whom is my brother-in-law, so it matters even more to me. That day, this was my shot. Better, more meaningful, and more meatball-centric than the one before.

Thanks for stopping by.

Light It Magazine for iPad

Hey Everyone,
The fine folks over at Kelby Media have come out with a new publication dedicated to Lighting for photographers. This is strictly for the iPad, and has an amazing collection of great photographers writing for it. The first issue is free. (Seems a little like a Crack Dealer, "The first hit is free") Trust me, this thing is gonna be as addictive, i mean if your looking to learn about lighting, if your not then you would probably care less. But if you are and own an iPad, head over and pick up the first issue.

"I'm on a Boat" Images.

Last weekend I took the ferry to Orcas Island, which is one of the San Juan Islands north of Seattle. As you might expect, everyone crowded to the rail to shoot the standard landscape/water “I’m on a boat” shots. Here is one that i took.

This cleared my way to head down to the underbelly of the ferry, where the grungy inner workings and structural elements were going completely unappreciated.

It was a beautiful hour-long ride. Rich textures and patterns in the steel led to meticulously arranged pipes and hoses. Unique valves were their own art objects. And much of the parking deck was unoccupied, exposing a vast expanse of concrete with brightly painted lanes and captivating symmetry.

Zenfolio Featured Site

Here's some good news. A few weeks ago Seven One Studio was contacted by Zenfolio who inquired about the possibility of featuring our website on their front page. Who, you may ask, is Zenfolio? Well for those photography novices, Zenfolio is a well respected web hosting provider for professional photographers. In addition to hosting photography sites, they manage all the sales, printing, and shipping of photographic works of art. Apparently, they were in the midst of redesigning their website and wanted to feature some of the more well designed websites, like Seven One Studio, on their front page. To say this is a compliment, is sort of an understatement. So of course I said yes!! Who doesn't want a little free publicity? Here is a picture of how the "spotlight" looked. And for those who haven't yet seen my website, just visit www.sevenonestudio.com. Let me know your favorite photos and maybe you'll see them on the front page.

Choices

Hey Everyone,
I have been going through thousands of pictures that i have taken in the last couple of weeks and need some help choosing between certain ones. So if you could leave in the Comments which image you prefer and possibly any reasoning behind it, i would appreciate it. And if say you like the composition of one, but don't love the color, let me know that too. And you can just use numbers, 1,2 or 3. Or NONE, i guess would be an option, if none of them do it for you, thats ok too.

Thanks

Ryan

A Question.

On a recent trip, I stopped by an Alpaca farm and got into a discussion/disagreement over this unique animal. It was my position that they are indeed very ugly animals. And others in my group thought they were really cute. And another had the theory, a magical theory if you will, that they are so ugly they become cute. Is this possible? Can something go so far to one side of a scale, that they circle back around to become the complete opposite?

Now I had some pictures that would prove my UGLY view point, but in fairness to the others, I decided to display the picture with the little baby and momma.

Let me know what you think.

Congrats to Chris Horner and Team Radioshack

I know this is a week late, but i first wanted to congratulate those guys for a great job at the Tour of California. And it made me think of the many Tour of California's i had the joy of watching and Photographing. These Images were all taken before there was a Team Radio Shack, so don't be looking for them.

Also Trek Bicycles is doing a series on Passion and being Driven towards a goal. Featuring Team Radio Shack rider Jani Brajkovic. I found it inspiring, and the new Trek Bike's were painted by Shepard Fairey, and they look Awesome.

Enjoy.

Option A or Option B

Long time no see. Well at least on this site.

But i am back and have some new stuff to share. I was in Los Angeles not to long ago and did some shooting down at Huntington Beach. It was at Sunset and there were lots of birds flying around, then they would land and i would run over and scare them and they would Fly into the air and i would shoot pictures of them. While this was loads of fun it wasn't really allowing me to get any great pictures because they were just of birds flying. So i decided to move on from the birds and try and shoot some backlit shots of the lifeguard towers. Then luckily some kids came around and were chasing after the birds, so i talked them into helping me out and chasing them towards the Lifeguard Stands.

So i ended up with a bunch of images, but i chose one and did two treatments on it, one is color and one is B&W, i can't decide which one i like more, so i thought i would throw it to my followers and see what you thought.

Option A
Option B

So leave some comments and let me know what you think.

Later

Break on through to the other side!!!

Hopefully we are through the Snowy portion of our Winter, but i am sure that just mentioning it means there is a big winter storm kicking up somewhere and on it's way to make me regret thinking the worst was over.

But i am living on the edge in 2011 and if that means taunting mother nature then so be it.

I did get a chance to go out and shoot in the cold snowy weather, i got a couple of nice pics. Unfortunately having moved up here from SoCal, i do not have the proper clothing to allow me to hike around in the snow, but i was out in it for an hour or so.

We did have a fun snowball fight with our neighbor, although it was 4 on 1, and i just mostly caught the snowballs she was throwing and threw them back at her, I see it as the Aikido of snow ball fighting, use her weapons against her.

Our weather is now back to rainy and dreary.

Here are some of the pics i took.

Enjoy

Vancouver

After living a mere 70 miles from Vancouver for a year, i finally got the opportunity to go and visit. I drove up last Saturday and met up with two very close friends. The weather was great, well as far as there being no clouds, but the temperature never reached freezing. So that hindered my photo taking as i don't have the right clothing so endure a whole lot of that.
But i did get out and shoot some, I will definitely head back up when the weather is a little warmer.

hope you enjoy.

Kinda Blue

While shooting my BLUE assignment yesterday, it was quite windy and i was trying to get an interesting shot of this flag that was blowing in the wind. I took nearly 20 shots of this one flag. I was gonna post it with the shots yesterday, but wasn't quite "Bluey" enough. So i saved it for today.

The Color Blue

Hey there peeps,

So i am going to start giving myself assignments. Feel free to join in. If you would like me to give the assignment in advance so we can share the pics, let me know, i can set up Flickr albums and we can share and discuss. But until then i will just post some of my pics here.

The first assignment was simply the color blue, which i got the idea from David Duchemins Creative Live class, I shot in town while i was in getting a coffee. And i am going to post more photo's, basically the best of that shoot, unless i come away with nothing, but hopefully i will get some good shots and those shots will get better and better.

Enjoy

Photo Books

When i was in school, I always kept sketchbooks, they were filled with sketches and ideas, and i would always cut out examples of good design that would inspire me. So when i needed to design or come up with ideas, I had a book full of inspiration. And as i am shooting more and more i am always trying to come up with poses and angles and interesting ways to process photos. So i have started a Photo reference book. My Nephew Jakob is also interested in photography, so i helped him start his own photo book. But there was one stipulation, we will put one image per page and then he has to write a sentence or two about why he likes the picture he chose. I think that is a great way too learn why you like what you like. So for any of you learning a craft, find things that interest and inspire you and deconstruct it.

Naval Change of Command

This past weekend i had the opportunity to photograph a Naval Change of Command Ceremony, It was quite impressive. It was shot inside of the Squadron Hangar, and had a giant flag in the background as you will see from some of the pictures. I was asked by the new Commanding officers wife to focus on their family, so most the pictures are of them, but i managed to get shots of the event.

Hope you enjoy
